Lakeside Nature Walk
Forest trails, open water and a lakeside fika — just outside Stockholm
Overview
The Lakeside Nature Walk, a guided nature experience, takes you from central Stockholm to the shores of Mälarö — where forest trails, wide water views and the rhythm of Nordic outdoor life unfold at a relaxed pace. The walk is designed around experience rather than distance: pausing to look, to listen, to understand the landscape, and to enjoy the simplicity of being outside in Sweden. Your guide brings genuine knowledge of the area's ecology, history and culture. The route moves through mixed birch and pine forest before opening out to the lake, with a fika stop at Kanaan's lakeside café midway through.
For context on the café stop, read our guide to the Swedish tradition of fika.
Experience Highlights
What You'll Do
After meeting your guide in central Stockholm, the group travels together to Mälarö — a short journey that takes you from the city to the edge of the Swedish landscape. From there, the walk unfolds in stages: first through quiet forest to reach the lakeshore, then along open water with views back towards the city, followed by a fika stop at Kanaan's café, a return through the forest with time to explore, and a relaxed walk back to the station. The pace throughout is unhurried. There is space to ask questions, to photograph, and to simply be in the landscape.
Experience Itinerary
How the experience unfolds, stage by stage.
Welcome & Departure
Your guide meets the group at a central Stockholm location for a brief introduction to the walk, the landscape ahead and what to expect. The group then travels together to Mälarö — a short journey by public transport that marks the transition from city to countryside.

First Views of Mälarö
Arriving at the water's edge, the full expanse of Mälarö opens up before you. Your guide sets the scene — sharing the history of this vast lake island and its role in shaping Stockholm — as the city recedes behind the treeline and the landscape takes over.

Lakeside Walk & Local Stories
The route follows established trails along the lakeshore through mixed birch and pine forest. As you walk, your guide introduces the local ecology — the birds, plants and seasonal rhythms of Mälarö — alongside stories of the communities that have lived alongside the lake for centuries.

Fika at Kanaan's Café
The walk pauses at Kanaan's café — a well-loved local spot with a terrace overlooking the lake. Coffee or tea and freshly baked pastry, enjoyed with the view and the quiet of the water. This is the unhurried heart of the Swedish outdoor tradition.

Into the Forest
After fika, the route moves inland into the forest. Your guide introduces the traditions of allemansrätten — Sweden's right to roam freely in nature — and the ecology of the surrounding woodland. There is time to explore quietly, to notice the details of the forest floor and the light through the canopy.

Return to Stockholm
The walk concludes at the local station for a short train ride back to the city. Your guide wraps up with reflections on the walk, recommendations for further exploring Swedish nature, and is happy to take any final questions before the group returns to Stockholm.

"We are so grateful to the guide for being flexible with us on the day of our tour. We were on a cruise ship and there were many delays the morning of our tour. The guide simply adjusted and was patient with us and the inevitable travel delays that sometimes occur when journeying abroad. The hike in the breathtaking forest and around two stunning lakes was much needed. The scents, sounds, clean air and feel of the Scandinavian forest were calling loudly, and the guide helped us connect in that space. The fika was amazing, too. I’m also glad we experienced the train system in Stockholm. I highly recommend the guide and this tour!"

"What a brilliant day we had with the guide. Easy meeting point close to the city centre at a great café and a quick train ride to our start point. The landscape was stunning and the forest was so peaceful. We even got to see a beautiful deer, a gorgeous non-venomous snake and a pair of swans with cygnets. I was in heaven. The guide was super friendly and engaging, providing us with an informative commentary on the ecology and history of the area, flora and fauna, Swedish culture and traditions. The walk was wonderful and we had lots of opportunities to stop, take photos and enjoy the scenery. Our introduction to Swedish fika was wonderful at Kanaan Café. The coffee and cakes were sensational. We were taken back to a local train station for the journey back to the city. A thoroughly enjoyable day shared with fellow adventurers."

"This was such a good day! The guide certainly introduced us to the joy of walking in the Swedish countryside in a fun and interesting way. We were lucky enough to see plenty of wildlife, listen to birdsong, enjoy the flowers and trees, and learn about the Swedish way of living with nature — something everyone in the group feels strongly about. There were plenty of options for making the walk easier or more challenging, and of course, the fika was excellent. Highly recommend this trip and would do it again tomorrow if I could."
